Thanks for the info, Arthur. I was in fact aware of the source for pistons on eBay, but the first oversize they offer is 42.4 mm. I have been told that my old pistons in the Formichino are stamped 42.2. Apparently, that size is not available and I will have to get the cylinders re-bored to fit the next available piston size. That was the reason for my question to Hugo. But obviously, with standard size pistons, he does not have that problem. /Lars

Hi,

Today I was going to remove the tyres and also put numbers at both ends of the spokes (at the hubs and rims) for later be able to mount the new black spokes at the new rims easily. I also want to get the hubs out for polishing.

No problem adding the numbers and taking many photos of the 4 faces of the wheels to remember the position, HOWEVER I had problems getting the tyres out of the rims, actually I quit without success.
In the last two photos you can see the tools I have for it. Using the same tools I have no problem removing the tyres of my other bikes, however the Scoiattolo is getting much more difficult.

Should I get at least one or two more of the long metal bar to be able to get it removed? as you can see I only have one long, the others three are small.

Any advise to be able to get these thick tyres out of the rim?

Hugo, it sounds like age has hardened the tire to the point where all the elasticity in the rubber is gone. I would try to heat the tire with a heat gun (carefully!) or by soaking a section of it in hot water and then try with the pry bars again. It might be necessary to use three or four pry bars to get the edge of the tire across the rim.

The easiest would probably be to take the wheel to the nearest tire service place and let them use their big tire removal tools to take it off.

Oops, I just looked at the picture of the tire and it looks new! So forget what I said about trying to soften it.
Just more and bigger pry bars - or a visit to the tire shop should do it.

lars if your cylinders are good and you pistons are good just glaze break or hone cylinder and fit new rings,if pistons only required buy larger size and regrind or machine to size and file rings to correct ring gap.

hugo make sure the tyre is of both sides of rim,press tyre down into bottom of rim opposite to where you need to remove tyre a small amount of soapy water on tyre to lubricate the edge ,take small bites about 3 inches apart around edge using 3 tyre leavers,as tyre comes of hold2 down move third one across to take next part of,hope this helps,

Thank you Lars and Arthur for the advises, as soon as I have time I will put them in practice :D

Here some photos of some progress. The leg shield need some welding because previous owner felt of the bike and some aluminium is gone. I do not have a good known aluminium welder in Amsterdam, but Rudolf has a good one close by, so he kept the parts there and prepared (removing the paint) for welding. Thanks Rudolf for this!!

Hi,

After the tedious job of removing all the spokes, finally the hubs are free. Yes, I know I could just cut the old spokes ending very fast, but I rather removing the nuts damaging the less as possible even if those spokes are probably useless.

Hi,

I want to remove the yellow highlighted parts before polishing the hubs and replace the bearings to new once. Before I use "brute force" on them, can anybody guide me to know the correct way to remove all those parts? Better ask than sorry.

hugo looks like threaded locking ring,unscrew rings and then press out bearings drift out.

I do not know if they are threaded locking ring, but in case you are right, they are completely flat on top. How could they be untreated?

As usual rudolf is correct, the parts Arthur refers to as threaded locking rings are in fact alloy retaining plates for the felt grease seals. these are easily damaged, I would replace with sealed bearings and use the alloy retaining plates as spacers wether they are damaged or not, Graham.

Thanks Rudolf and Graham,

Following Rudolf advise I managed to dismantle the rear wheel hub as you can see at the photo, however the front one is getting difficult. I am hitting but nothing move at all. I am afraid of hit too much bending the "axle", however I guess there is no other option, correct?

Hi again,

Beside the fact I can not dismantling the front hub's bearing/axle/speedo gear, I am also struggling removing the gear lever of the engine cover.

As you can see at the photo, I removed everything else of that cover, including the kickstarter lever, that also has this "pin" to hold the lever in place. The one from the kickstarter came out more or less easy, but this one from the gear lever is really stuck.

As you can see at the photo, the thread is even gone (unfortunately) while I was trying to remove the "pin", so at this point I do not even care to damage more that "pin", as long as I manage to remove it.

Any advise for this and also for the front hub?

With the nut off the pin it is just a case of knocking it through. They can be stubborn especially if it has gone in out of line. Be careful there are alot of cases around where people have damaged the casing by missing the top of the pin when drifting it out. The pin is going to have to be replaced anyway, so just give it a well aimed clout.

It's been along while since I removed that part on the hub that drives the speedometer.
Possibly Rudolf or Ian could advise?.

Hi,

At the end the bearings, axle, etc came out following what Rudolf mentioned before, exactly as for the rear hub, only that this side needed a bit more "strength". Ready for polishing. :D

Also the pin of the gears levers needed some stronger hits, instead using the nylon hammer I change it using the full metal one, now is all out.

Today I received here the exhaust, still pending to weld the mounting tab (I will take them from the old exhausts), then they will be ready to send to chrome.

The frame of the seat is ready for upholstery as you can see at the last photo, including the recently chrome "hooks" for the sides of the rear passenger holder. Thanks Rudolf for helping me with this :D

Hi Hugo, did you buy the mufflers from Brezzi Samuele, or have you found another source?

They seem to have the 28 mm diameter with welded mounting tab, but the 32 mm without. I would need a set of the 32 mm mufflers for my Junior, but at 500 Euros plus welding new mounting tabs, plus re-chroming, the cost is not insignificant.
Just curious to know if you have found a better alternative.

Hi Lars,

I was aware of Samuele Brezzi mufflers, however I decided to buy from another source for several reasons. Even if the 28 mm diameter has the mounting tab on it, it is not the the correct position for the Scoiattolo, so I would have to cut, weld and chrome again. Also the price I got buying from another source was cheaper including the shipping.

When I contacted the seller he told me he has only 28mm diameter mufflers.

I think you are not 100% right about the price from Brezzi. Maybe I am wrong, but I think, if I remember correctly, a few years ago I was interested in a pair of 32mm muffler from him. I contact him asking if the price he had was for 1 unit or for a pair (because everything looks like is for 1 units) however he confirmed that the price was for a pair.

So if I am correct the price would not be 500 euros, but instead 250 euros + shipping + re-chroming.

In your case I would contact him to clarify.
